Wine tourism to discover two unique territories, Montalcino and the Tuscan coast, and their wines.
Castiglion del Bosco is one of the largest and oldest estates in the territory of Montalcino; together with Tenuta Prima Pietra it is Massimo Ferragamo’s wine estate. They are located respectively in the heart of Val d’Orcia and on the Tuscan coast, in Riparbella. They reopened their hospitality with a rich and renewed range of wine tourism experiences, discovering wineries and their great wines.
Wine tourism: experiential tours
The experiential tours offered by the two wineries, both managed by Enologist Cecilia Leoneschi, are personalized. Therefore, they are thought for every kind of public, from wine lovers to experts. They offer a unique opportunity to explore different terroirs and taste wines of the highest level, also in combination with local products.
Wine tourism to fully experience two realities united by the same passion and devotion to the Tuscan territory and its enological traditions.
Castiglion del Bosco
Castiglion del Bosco is one of the largest and historical estates of the territory. The winery is one of the founding members of the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino, in 1967. Owned by Massimo Ferragamo since 2003, Castiglion del Bosco is a magical place. It spreads on 2,000 hectares in the heart of Val D’Orcia, Unesco World Heritage Site, with 62 hectares of vineyards. The natural approach to viticulture – organic certification – together with advanced technology in the winery allowed the achievement of excellent results in terms of quality of wines and a perfect balance in the vineyard.
The heart of the production, 250,000 bottles per year, is represented by 4 labels of Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, including the exclusive limited edition Zodiaco, the reserve Millecento, the cru Campo del Drago; Rosso di Montalcino is also produced and since 2015, Rosso di Montalcino cru Gauggiole.
The farm also produces Chardonnay, Italian extra virgin olive oil, grappa and local honey.
Millecento Wine Club‘s winery, one of the most elite in the world of wine is accessible only by invitation, and offers different types of tours, during the whole year. From Brunello tasting to the art of cheese pairing, up to prestigious vertical tastings with very old vintages, as well as an annual event to “live” the harvest. The management of the winery is entrusted to the enologist Cecilia Leoneschi. The estate also includes The Club, the only private golf club in Italy with 18 holes designed by the legendary British Open champion Tom Weiskopf on 210 hectares of rolling hills, and Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco, a 5-star L resort located in the ancient medieval village, with 23 suites, 11 villas with private pool, spa, 2 restaurants, organic garden and cooking school.
Beginning in May 2021, the winery reopened daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a variety of experiences.
The Classic Tour is a great opportunity to learn about the Brunello di Montalcino region and the wines of Castiglion del Bosco. During a visit to the winery and the aging room, sommeliers will guide guests through the entire production process, from the vineyard to wine. The tour will end with a guided tasting of four different types of wine, accompanied by fresh bread or breadsticks and extra virgin olive oil.
The Wine Experience is the most significant wine tourism experience that guests can live in Castiglion del Bosco. It is divided into two parts: visit of the winery and tasting. The first one offers the possibility to know in detail all the wine-making processes, followed by the exploration of the room where wines are aged in precious French oak barrels. At the end, the guided tasting of six wines, accompanied by a selection of Tuscan cheeses, fresh bread, extra virgin olive oil and honey, both produced in-house.
Food pairing and cheese
For those who would like to know the art of pairing wine with food, Castiglion del Bosco offers a guided tasting of six wines, including the limited edition of Vin Santo San Michele, matched to a selection of six different kinds of Italian cheese, fresh and blue. Before the tasting, guests will be taken on a tour of the impressive winery and the exclusive Members’ Cellar, a unique place in its genre and exclusive for Millecento Wine Club members.
An experience not to be missed for true wine lovers. Immersed in the evocative scenery of the aging room and the Members’ Cellar, guests will be guided through a tasting of six of the best vintages of Brunello di Montalcino, including the excellent 2016 ranked second among the best wines of Italy by James Suckling with 99 points. The tasting is accompanied by a selection of Tuscan pecorino cheese, fresh bread, extra virgin olive oil and honey.
Tenuta Prima Pietra
Prima Pietra is Chiara and Massimo Ferragamo’s first property in the world of wine (hence the name). Located on the Tuscan coast, few steps away from the sea. The vineyards – with certified organic management since 2016 – are located in Riparbella, one of the most fascinating areas of the Tuscan coast. They overlook the Tyrrhenian Sea at a privileged altitude, from where it is possible to admire the whole coast as far as Elba Island, Capraia and, in the clearest days, even the farthest Corsica.
The winery, inaugurated in July 2019, results from a careful and meticulous recovery of the ancient pre-existing farmhouse. Modern and functional, it houses inside an area dedicated to winemaking with different types of wine vessels such as steel, concrete and the local cocciopesto. Open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., hospitality at Prima Pietra also restarted in May with new food and wine experiences.
Experiences can also be booked online at this link.

Wine tourism in the true meaning of the word. The Wine Experience, in fact, will make guests travel through the rolling hills of Tuscany, from the coast where the Supertuscans are the masters to the more historic Montalcino where the Sangiovese Grosso reigns. During the visit of the vineyard and the cellar, they will explore the barrel room where the wines are aged in precious French oak barrels.
